Salikenni is a typical gambian rural village, with a population of about 5000 people. As many young adults are unemployed and do not have a stable income, very intense, physical labor dependent subsistence farming is people's main activity. As Salikenni is located close to the Gambia River there is also a long history of fishing.
Just like many other rural Gambian Villages, Salikenni has a great problem with youth migration towards Europe (back-way). A lack of perspective in The Gambia drives many young boys and girls towards Europe. The highly dangerous attempt of crossing the Mediterranean-Sea on overcrowded boats costs many desperate youths their life.
The ultimate goal of the nursery school and our
Educational Mixed Farming Center (MFC)
is to work towards an environment that gives young people hope and perspective in The Gambia. Our dream is a brighter FUTURE IN SALIKENNI.
